Quick answer
Checked on 15 Sep 2026: W Lounge, LuminAir, Canvas and Floor17 are all active. Canvas says the terrace is walk-in; LuminAir publishes a smart-casual dress code plus special hours/closures; Floor17's rooftop remains weather-dependent; W Lounge runs its WET Deck and event programme. Check the official venue page on the day.
Amsterdam's rooftops offer a different perspective on the city, but there is no single “best rooftop”. W Lounge, LuminAir, Canvas and Floor17 suit different profiles: central location, a more polished hotel setting, a relaxed atmosphere or a broader skyline experience. The useful choice depends on location, reservations, weather, budget and the kind of evening you want.
W Lounge: central location and hotel atmosphere
W Lounge is part of W Amsterdam on Spuistraat in the city centre. The venue presents itself as a lounge and cocktail bar with city views and event programming. If you are already around Dam Square, the Nine Streets or central Amsterdam, the location keeps travel simple.
Best for: visitors who want to remain central and prefer a hotel cocktail-bar atmosphere. Trade-off: being central does not automatically mean the widest panorama; the value may be the combination of location and setting.
Opening hours, events and access to the WET Deck can change. Confirm current information directly with the venue.
LuminAir: an elevated view near Centraal Station
LuminAir is on the 11th floor of DoubleTree by Hilton Amsterdam Centraal Station on Oosterdokseiland. Its location is particularly practical for people arriving through Centraal Station or staying in the central area.
The venue operates as a rooftop bar with its own programme. That means the experience can differ by day: a normal evening may feel different from a special event or reserved experience.
Best for: people who want an elevated view with very easy access from the station. Trade-off: events, special tables and reservations can change atmosphere and availability.
Canvas: a more relaxed option in Oost
Canvas is at Volkshotel on Wibautstraat in Amsterdam-Oost. It combines restaurant, bar, city views and night programming. The atmosphere is less tied to luxury-hotel branding and more connected to Volkshotel's broader cultural programme.
The official page allows table reservations but states that the terrace follows its own policy and is not reserved in the same way. That is a good example of why rooftop reservation rules should not be generalised.
Best for: people already in Oost who want dinner, drinks and a more informal setting. Trade-off: if your itinerary is entirely central, the journey should be worth the atmosphere you are seeking.
Floor17: skyline views in Amsterdam-West
Floor17 is located at Leonardo Hotel Amsterdam Rembrandtpark in West. The venue highlights its rooftop terrace and panoramic view across the city. Outdoor terrace use is weather-dependent and the programme can include seasonal events.
Best for: visitors looking for a more open skyline perspective who are happy to leave the historic core. Trade-off: it requires more travel from central Amsterdam, but the different location also creates a different view.
Quick comparison
| Venue | Best for | Area | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| W Lounge | Central hotel cocktail-bar setting | Centrum | More about setting and location than distant panorama |
| LuminAir | Elevated view near Centraal | Oosterdok | Events and reservations can change the experience |
| Canvas | Relaxed atmosphere in Oost | Oost | Terrace policy differs from indoor reservations |
| Floor17 | Wide skyline and rooftop terrace | West | Further from the historic centre |
“Rooftop” does not always mean outdoors all evening
Some venues combine indoor and outdoor areas. In Amsterdam this matters because wind, rain and temperature can change terrace use. Do not book only from a summer photo without confirming whether the outdoor experience you want will actually be available.
- Check whether the terrace is open.
- Confirm whether your reservation guarantees an outdoor area or only a table at the venue.
- Bring an extra layer, especially at night.
- Keep an indoor alternative when the outdoor view is the main reason for visiting.
Reservations: check the venue, not a citywide rule
W Lounge, LuminAir, Canvas and Floor17 use their own booking systems and conditions. Private events, large groups and special nights can change availability. The safest approach is to open the official venue page when you are ready to book.
Do not treat claims such as “Amsterdam rooftops never accept walk-ins” or “you always need a reservation” as universal truths. Policy depends on the venue and the day.
Dress code
There is no single dress code for Amsterdam rooftops. Some venues feel more polished and others more casual. If clothing matters to your plan, check with the venue instead of applying a generic rooftop rule.
Price: compare the experience, not an old table
Menus and prices change. A table claiming an “average cocktail price” quickly becomes stale and creates false precision. Check the current menu and see what is included in special experiences or VIP reservations.
If budget matters, compare more than the drink price: travel, reservation conditions, food and the value of the view or event also affect the real cost of the evening.
How to choose by profile
- First evening and want to remain central? W Lounge or LuminAir minimise travel.
- Want a relaxed Oost atmosphere? Canvas.
- Want a broader skyline view in West? Floor17.
- Want a specific event? choose by programme rather than the rooftop name.
- Bad weather? confirm whether the indoor space still provides the experience you want.
Accessibility and groups
Hotel rooftops generally use lifts, but specific access needs, group size and seating should be confirmed directly. Do not assume every part of a terrace is equally accessible or that a large group can arrive without advance contact.
Decision summary
Choose a rooftop through the combination of location, atmosphere, view and logistics. W Lounge works well for a central evening; LuminAir for an elevated view near the station; Canvas for a more informal Oost setting; Floor17 for a skyline experience in West.
AmsterDu's recommendation is to check three things on the day: terrace opening, reservation policy and programme. Those factors change the experience more than any permanent ranking of “best rooftops”.
